Main improvements

AdOpt? There is now an option checkbox that allows you to plot the tapered column extraction window and the tapered column spectrum, in addition to the optimal extraction. It considers the local background calculated by optimal, so if you use a local polynomial background, it will be subtracted prior extraction of the tapered column. If you wish to reproduce the usual tapered column, the background should be set to 'off'. The extraction window width is set by the default calibration files which assume a point-like source.
General Compatibility with CASSIS v5 spectra (to be released soon)
MPFIT updated the version of mpfit (version from Dec 21, 2011)

Bug fixes

Bug fixes

General Fixed a bug with IDL 8 for the legends. IDL 8 introduced an internal "legend" procedure that is not compatible with the astrolib one. The astrolib legend routine was renamed sm_legend.pro
Flux calibration The LL post-campaign 44 data extracted with the "full slit (extended source)" extraction mode was giving wrong flux values. This bug existed in version 8.2.0 until 8.2.4

Main changes for versions >=8.2.4
  • Compatibility with IDL 8.0 and 8.1
  • Possibility to retrieve CASSIS spectra through interface (Tools menu)
Main changes for versions >=8.2.3
  • Changed calibration for S18.7.0 optimal extraction. The new calibration uses the same stellar templates as the ones used for the calibration for S18.18. Be sure to check the relevant documentation pages.
  • Smart is in the process of being validated with IDL 8.0, stay tuned and contact us directly if you need the updated procedures before the next release.
Main changes for versions >=8.2
  • Compatibility with s18.18 data.
  • New flux calibration for optimal extraction (AdOpt). Be sure to check the relevant documentation pages. The overall flux is lower than previous calibrations by a few percent due to slightly different stellar templates and a different photometric calibration. This flux calibration is closer to that of the SSC and therefore the spectra extracted with optimal are now more similar to the tapered column extraction, and with the photometry of the other Spitzer instruments.
  • The SL2 IRF (intrapixel response function) has been updated. The IRF is used to calibrate the wiggles at short-wavelengths due to the undersampling and concerns only optimal extraction (AdOpt). In addition to SL2, we also introduce a LL2 IRF.
  • The installation procedure hasn't changed, but it is mandatory to remove the users directory 'smart_bin' before using v8.2 for the first time. This will ensure that the new calibration files are being used.
  • For backward compatibility, you should rename your old datasets when using v8.2. This way the project variables will be reset and no bugs will be encountered.

Main improvements

General Full compatibility with IDL 8.0 and IDL 8.1
AdOpt The new detection parameter introduced in v8.2.3 was not giving an accurate value in sigma units. This is now solved.
AdOpt It is now possible to specify a broadening parameter. This will broaden the PSF with a gaussian whose FWHM in arcsec can be input in the GUI ('Sources' tab). We encourage users to contact the SMART team directly when using this feature as it is still a preliminary feature.
CASSIS Possibility to import CASSIS spectra to the project manager directly from SMART. Go to the 'Tools' menu.

v8.2.3 (08 Aug 2011)

Calibration The S18.7.0 calibration didn't include the special correction for the LL2 undersampling
Calibration The S18.7.0 calibration has changed, it now uses the same stellar templates as S18.18.0 extractions. Check this page for more detail.
AdOpt Spectra extracted without any associated uncertainties had often unrealistically small errors. The updated version of AdOpt calculates a local noise on a row-by-row basis if no uncertainties are provided.
AdOpt The parameter used to minimize the residuals is now a 'sigma detection' parameter rather that the residuals themselves in e-/sec. The detection is defined as the difference between the spatial profile before and after removal of the source, this difference being then divided by the rms of the spatial profile.

Bug fixes

IDEA Spectra extracted with the "Optimal 2 nods" method failed during line fit in ISAP.
IDEA No more error when exiting the line fitting GUI and not saving the result
AdOpt Errors and BMASK were not taken into account when extracting BCD3P? images

Main improvements

Calibration Compatibility with S18.18 data
AdOpt Flux calibration RSRFs (relative spectral response functions) are updated, along with a technical paper to come
AdOpt SL2, LL2, and SL1 now have intra-pixel responsivity functions that will correct for the wiggles seen in the spectra at short wavelengths. The SL2 correction is merely an improvement, while the correction for LL2 and SL1 are being introduced.
Extraction A new help button explains the various ways to extract data (single plane, 3-plane data, with or without the uncertainties, ...). It is also now possible to extract spectra in Tapered/Full slit using sets of bcd, func, and bmask files selected altogether.
AdOpt An artifact appeared at 5.9um because of a bad PSF profile for the corresponding wavelength row. The PSF was improved and the artifact is now gone.
IDEA Began improving the average GUI and fixed a few bugs on the automatic bin size calculation. The bin size was sometimes not correct depending on the selected pixels. Now the automatic value is the maximum bin within the selected range
IRSCLEAN call Changes are being made to the IRSCLEAN wrapper to allow users to use IRSCLEAN 2.0
Dataset Manager Errors when combining DCE images are better propagated, and uses the fact that the standard deviation should also account for the weights applied to the data
Dataset Manager Now possible to append the ExpID? to the file name, for instance in cases where the entry names in the dataset manager are identical

Bug fixes

General the code in AdOpt and the project manager could fail in some platforms/configurations because of the use of spawn commands. Platform independent alternative code has been implemented.
IRSCLEAN call the bmask values were not taken into account in some cases, so that only the RMASK was used.
PAHFIT call Now checks for NaNs? in errors in addition to zeros.
IDEA Unit conversion is now possible when importing CUBISM spectra in MJy/sr
General Better handling of memory. Several memory leaks fixed

Known bugs under investigation

IDEA When performing a line fit, the program might complain about the wrong unit being used. Next version will solve this problem. Contact us through the bugtracker if you need the new procedure asap
IDEA There seems to be a problem when averaging order 2 data only. The resulting spectrum does not show up in the main IDEA window.
IDL There could be a problem running Smart with IDL 8.0. Further tests will be needed. If you have any problem running Smart with IDL 8.0 please let us know by reporting an issue in the bugtracker.

Main improvements

Dataset manager Under image operations, it is now possible to create 3-plane data out of single plane files, and also to split 3-plane data into 3 files. The difference between 3-plane data and single-plane data in SMART is based on the filename (*_bcd3p.fits for 3 planes, normal SSC naming convention for single planes)
Dataset manager 3-plane data can be cleaned and combined as long as the filename reflects it is a 3-plane data file (see above).
PAHFIT wrapper The wrapper has been separated to a dedicated file in Smart so that users can edit it. PAHFIT won't run if the file is not changed to reflect the user's needs.

Main improvements:

Adopt New flux calibration for optimal extraction. New RSRFs were created and will be the default ones. They will correct for a known overestimate of the flux calibration going from essentially 0% in SL1 to ~5% in LL1 (as compared to a regular tapered column extraction).
Adopt Possibility to ignore some pixels in the spatial profile (especially relevant for polynomial background estimate in very complex regions).
Adopt Possibility to save the spatial extent plot as a PS. In addition, the data (PSF and data, including the fits) is now given in the text box below the plot in the GUI.

Adopt The RSRF showed tiny pixel-to-pixel variation due to a problem with bad pixels during the RSRF calculation (especially visible in SL1). While the next Smart version will include a completely new RSRF, we fixed the current one by smoothing the RSRF.
Adopt/IDEA fixed a bug for which operations made in IDEA on optimal spectra would cause all the data to be masked
Adopt/Skyplot Requests to IRSA account for unpurged data products. Presence of obsolete data at IRSA servers would cause Skyplot to return no results

Main improvements:

Calibration Compatibility with s18.7 calibration release
Calibration calibration files are now chosen automatically depending on the data file version. The choice is based on the value of the CAL_SET keyword. The automatic choice is made via the GUI only. For scripts, there is now a convenient way to set the calibration file version using: sm_cal_set, cal_version='18_7' (note the underscore). Then any kind of override can be done.
Dataset manager possibility to clean many images at once using IRSCLEAN from the dataset manager. If only BCD images are selected then the RMASK from IRSCLEAN is used. If BMASKs are selected as well, then the BMASK corresponding to a given image is also used in addition to the RMASK. Note: the file names must be standard (i.e., with '_bcd', '_bmask' in the string). Note: IRSCLEAN must be installed by the user beforehand.
Dataset manager possibility to combine DCEs from a given exposure ID. Any number of DCEs/ExpIDs/AORKeys can be selected for this to work: only DCEs from a given AORKey AND ExpID? will be combined. If only BCD images are selected then the DCEs are combined using a simple mean. If uncertainty files are selected as well, then they are used to perform an error-weighted mean. Note: again, the file names must be standard (i.e., with '_bcd', '_func' in the string).
General There is no default extraction anymore, and if a source is not found (for tapered column), there will be a message asking what to do. Also, if the source is found very far away from the nod position, there will be a warning message. Reminder: for scripts, sm_bcd_isap needs to have the /script_mode keyword set. You also need to specify the extraction type even when it's a full extraction. This is done by adding the S_EXTY30 header keyword.
